How to find the trout

Article by Andy Edwards

Where is the trout in a river? When you arrive to a new stream what do you look for? The first thing to look for is usually if there is any trouts that rise to catch flies above water. There is many more things to look for that might not be that obvious, take between 15 to 20 minutes before you start fishing and look around the water. What kind of flies is hatching, if you have access to Internet you can find many websites that give you information about flies that hatch at different times, then you can prepare and tye some flies before you go fishing. It has happened that the fly the trout is eating is not in the fly box, nothing can be more anoying.

You might think that anything works that look similar to the flies that is hatching, if you haven’t learned the lesson yet I am sure you will soon enough. If the river is recently stocked this might not be true they eat anything that floats. Look at bushes and weeds near the water, spider webs is also a good place to look for clues. When I start fishing I usually start with a floating fly maybe because I think that’s the most fun, even if you don’t see any trouts rising you can still get lucky, otherwise you should look for a nymph they are available all the time.

Trouts is usually a very shy fish if they have been in the water for a while and are wild, not recently stocked. Look for hiding places in the water behind rocks where the stream are not so strong, under a tree branch that hangs out, or other things that could work as a hiding place. If it is very warm or has been warm a long time you might have to find deeper water to catch anything or find the right time when something the trout likes is hatching. Sometimes the stream can seem dead and suddenly come to live and you will have a moment of your life when the trout comes out of the hiding place to start eating. These are the moments you will remember in the winter when you are sitting creating different flies by your vise.
